Privacy

The topic of privacy when it comes to the internet is quite the controversy. After watching the TED Talk videos about internet privacy, I've realized the serious issue online privacy is and the consequences we as a society may face. Not only do companies and the government have basically full access to every detail of your life, but they could use it against you. One of the videos talked about how even a google search could affect how you are judged in court for whatever that reason may be. Another TED Talk discussed how your online presence is as permanent as a tattoo. Once you put something online, they say it never disappears. This is dangerous for not only my generation, but especially for the future generations of children who grow up using the internet. There is a fine line between being cautious of what you personally put online, and having our entire lives hacked by the government for selfish and unnecessary reasons. There should be a change in laws regarding privacy that impact the way we feel safe as an internet user. There needs to be laws prohibiting the excessive information the government gathers about us through our personal internet usage.

Propaganda

From our class' EOTO presentations, we learned about propaganda. This form of advertising has been used as a manipulative tool since the 1600s. Propaganda is using misleading or biased information to promote a political cause. Although this technique has been used for centuries, it still continues to be an important aspect of our political culture today. The main purpose of propaganda is to manipulate other's views and opinions using symbols, designs, gestures, music, etc. Iconic propaganda has circulated through American history throughout the decades that defines the historical aspects of that time period. A famous example is the "We Can Do It!" poster from 1943 that was created to boost the morale of women during WWII as they went to work in place of men at war. Throughout the years it has resurfaced to promote feminism. Often propaganda was used to both promote war, and anti-war movements. Another famous example is the Uncle Sam posted with the quote "I want YOU for U.S. Army!" encouraging men to enlist in the army during WWI. Propaganda has been a way to persuade the public to one side of a political standpoint and continues to be used in today's society.

Citizen Journalism

The official definition of citizen journalism is “The collection, dissemination, and analysis of news and information by the general public, especially by means of the Internet.” Due to the rise in social media and instant technology, citizens who would normally be the consumers of journalism are now able to contribute their own content, therefore becoming a citizen journalist. Here are some pros and cons of citizen journalism:

Pros:
- Constant information flow
- Collaboration between journalists and consumers
- Beneficial to countries in which media is limited

Cons:
- Not always reliable information
- Facts are not usually back checked
- Possibly biased
- Competition for news outlets

How are we affected by citizen journalists?

Old vs. young generations:
- Since older people are generally not as inclined to get their news from social media, they are not as affected by citizen journalism and typically stick to professional outlets
- The younger generations are affected by citizen journalism because they are more likely to get their news from social media, as well as participate in the conversation and information flow

My Online Presence

When I google my name, a few photos, articles and websites pop up. These articles and photos are mostly lacrosse related, stemming from HPU's athletics website. My lacrosse roster information comes up first, then following are articles that mention my name, then photos of me playing. After that I found my LinkedIn and Facebook profiles, as well as articles and roster information from high school sports teams. The social media accounts that I use most often don't initially appear in my Google search, however if I added the key word 'Instagram' to the search I'm sure I could access it. My social media accounts are all private, however the content I post on them is very respectable and responsible. This is for career and lacrosse purposes. Our coach does not allow us to post any type of inappropriate content, in the best interest of our team and our personal futures. If someone were to look at my Facebook, they would see nothing more than pictures my friends tag of me, all of which I monitor to make sure they are clean. The same goes for my LinkedIn and Instagram profiles, except I post occasionally with others or to update my personal and work experience. My email could be found on my LinkedIn, but no other personal information is visible from my social media accounts. I believe that social media can make people lonely or depressed if taken too seriously. Revealing too much personal information online can be dangerous and could get people into trouble. The most important thing I learned from Googling myself is that I should continue to keep a low profile online, especially regarding my personal life.

Diffusion of Innovations: Netflix

In 1997, Netflix was founded by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings. The late 90s - early 2000s was the exploratory phase for Netflix because it was intended to be a DVD rental service, similar to Blockbuster, but the catch was that it was online. The idea of ordering a DVD online and having it delivered to you in the mail was a new and innovative concept for the late 90s/early 2000s. The early adaptors and early majority would rent these DVDs for $2 - $4 and keep them for as long as they please, however the old DVD must be returned before renting a new one. I would say the tipping point for Netflix would be in 2010 when they created their online streaming service. This changed the game of movie/TV show streaming forever. This tipping point would quickly cause DVD rental stores to go out of business. I would say Netflix caught on so quickly because people in this current society want immediate results and convenience. The previous online ordering of movies and no return date was definitely a convenient factor in the uprising of this company. Now with the easy, accessible online steaming service Netflix provides today, there is nothing but convenience and quick results. The only downside I could see Netflix having would be the selection of shows and movies they provide. Netflix may have been the first to adapt this idea of online streaming, but now that they have competition, are do they have the best quality selection? That is up for the viewer to decide.

Values of Free Expression

Of the Eight Values of Free Expression, I chose to discuss number seven, "Promote Innovation." I feel this value is important because it describes the overall values and rights of the United States as a whole. This country thrives off of the freedom we are given, therefore our people are encouraged to innovate and create the unimaginable. Without the freedom to speak or create whatever they choose, people are less likely to innovate or express themselves in unique ways. Free expression gives us the power to "fulfill" our needs and desires in ways that people that live under limits can not. The whole purpose of creating the United States of America was to give the people a right to speak, innovate, and make their own decisions. Promoting innovation is such an important value in our society and has resulted in not only a better life, but also life-changing technologies and ideas that have continued to modernize the world.

My 5 Favorite Fall Trends of 2019

Fall is officially upon us. Fall is my favorite season for a few reasons. First of all, its not too hot but not too cold, so big sweaters and high-rise jeans are in full force. Secondly, boots are finally acceptable to pull out of the closet. But those are just the typical fall basics. With fall weather also comes new fall trends. Your favorite brands pulling out all the stops to get their coolest new lines on the market just in time for the holidays. I took it upon myself to list my personal favorite new trends this fall:

1. The trench coat

The trench coat is timeless. You can go casual, or make things interesting with patterns like this cheetah print. Throw on a solid color underneath and you are ready to hit the streets this fall. Trench coats are one of my all time fall favorites and they will never go out of style. You can't go wrong. If you want to go classy with the better quality trench coat, Urban Outfitters (around $175) has you covered. If you want the cheaper option, Forever 21 or Asos (around $50) would be my suggestion.
2. Doc Martin boots

Like I said before, now is the time finally pull out those boots you have been saving for a long-awaited fall outfit. Doc Martens are in, and they are working every angle. The 2019 trend says you can wear them with skirts, dresses, or pants, and we're all about it. Doc Martins usually cost around $180, but they are worth the purchase. Pairing them with almost any fall outfit will give it that fun, edgy look.

3. Cross body bags

A fall must-have. Cross body bags are all the rage this season, and I can see why. Cute, small, and convenient... what more could you need? You could go basic with black or tan, or go bold with an embroidered pattern for an old school look.

4. Hoops

The key to accessorizing any outfit: hoop earrings. The simple solution to completing any look is throwing on a pair of these. They are easy, they go with anything, and they are light. The best recommendation for the best jewelry is Anthropologie!

5. Turtle necks

Similar to the trench coat, turtle necks will never go out of style. The perfect fall weather outfit always involves a good turtle neck. No matter how many I have, I always continue buying them! This cozy turtle neck is perfect for any occasion.

The First Radio

Everyone knows the radio is one of the most influential inventions in history. Here is some history and facts about the creation of the radio and its impact on society:

History:

  • Invented by Guglielmo Marconi in 1895
  • Radio technology began as “wireless telegraphy”
  • Before the 1920s radios were used to contact ships at sea
  • Civilians then began purchasing radios for private use
  • KDKA was the first officially licensed radio station
  • Radios became a common household item and a source of entertainment in the U.S. and the U.K. when the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) became the leading source of information to the public

Fun Facts:

  • AM stands for Amplitude Modulation and FM stands for Frequency Modulation
  • WEAF in New York City (owned by AT&T) played the first radio advertisement in the U.S. in 1923
  • The “golden age” of radio is considered to be between the 1920s and 1940s because radio was at its peak of popularity and was the dominant medium in the U.S.
Impact on Society:

  • Radios had a huge impact on society since the were created
  • They changed the way we communicate by providing a way to broadcast information on a universal platform
  • Radio continued to advance throughout history, providing society with not only a way to hear news, music, and entertainment, but also began the evolution of consumer culture in the U.S.
  • The radio became a powerful social influence to the world and connected people on a level that they had never experienced before

3 Must-Haves to Pack for Vacation

Who doesn’t love traveling? Whether you prefer an exciting adventure, or a relaxing getaway, the end goal is always to get your money’s worth. The key to a successful vacation is simple: packing the right things. Nothing is worse than finally getting to your dream destination and realizing you forgot an essential. Here is must-have checklist to ensure that you have the trip of a lifetime!

1. The right clothing
Heres an obvious one. It’s misconception to say that packing light is the answer to a successful vacation. Packing smart, however, is the way to go. Prepare your outfits in advance, so the frantic search for a good outfit isn’t an issue on your trip. Prepare for every possibility with a combination of both casual and dressier attire. Planning your activities will determine how many of each outfit you will need to bring. Preparing your outfits in advance will ensure you less stress throughout the trip, as well as less random clothing being thrown into your suitcase at the last minute “just in case” you need it, taking up space that is not needed. This goes for shoes as well. Pack neutral shoes that go with most of your outfits, so that you can pack lighter, because sometimes packing too many pairs of shoes can take up too much room in our luggage.

2. The perfect travel bag
Having the perfect travel bag for your vacation is important. Something accessible, light, comfortable, and efficient will be the key to success. Nothing is worse than lugging around a heavy, cluttered mess of a bag, or one that doesn't hold enough when walking around. Bring a carry-on that will hold your passport, cell phone, headphones, snacks, chargers, laptop, etc, that is easily accessible and also comfortable. Chances are you will be lugging this bag around everywhere you go, so make sure its one that wont be giving you neck pain by the end of the day.

3. Toiletries
Better safe than sorry when it comes to toiletries. Pack for any possibility because there is nothing worse than realizing you forgot an essential toiletry and having to take time out of your trip to go purchase it. This includes things such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, deodorant, makeup, etc. The simple every day items are sometimes the things we often forget to pack! A trick I like to use is going through my nightly routine in my head when packing so that I easily remember each item I use and remember to pack it.

Cell phones & Social Media: 3 Reasons Why They are Ruining our Lives

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=195&v=5DU1B_XkyIk

Everyone has a cell phone, and everyone has some form of social media. It's the way today's world works. After watching this YouTube video, I realized that it really is an accurate representation of how we interact and live our day-to-day lives. Having a personal device and social media accounts at all times changes the way we live, think, and act. Knowing this way of living won't be changing any time soon, here are some reasons to consider reducing your cell phone/social media time and why these platforms make a huge impact on society today.

1. Cell phones take away the opportunity to work on our social skills

Today's generation has a serious issue with speaking professionally and using basic social skills due to the over-use of cell phones. Interacting digitally is more convenient and less awkward. Although these sound like pros, they can easily be translated into cons. Without these basic social skills of speaking directly to others and feel comfortable in uncomfortable situations, kids won't know how to behave in a professional scenario, due to their serious lack of social experience.

2. Society as a whole feels the need to document every moment and upload it to social media

This may sound like a minor issue, but our world today is more focused one the amount of likes on a post, than actually enjoying themselves and the moments they just documented. At the end of the day, it's your life, so why are we so focused on what our followers think of it?

3.  Social media leads to self consciousness

The posts we see on social media (from celebrities or friends/family) always leave us comparing others lives to our own. This is an unhealthy obsession that constantly reminds us of what we don't have or "what we should have."

Greta Thunberg

I found an article on www.theamericanconservative.com discussing the Greta Thunberg's obsession with climate change, and how it relates back to her diagnosis of depression, autism, OCD, and an eating disorder. As most of us know, Greta has gone viral on the internet and social media for her aggressive efforts to spread awareness on climate change and shame the government for not doing enough to make a difference. Her young age and well-spoken speeches have caught the attention of millions,  bringing both good and bad publicity upon herself. The article points out that although her arguments are valid, it is unsettling to watch her parents allow this climate issue to torment a teenager with social issues in to a frantic state. It states, "It’s perhaps the greatest tragedy in world history. But at this stage, I don’t see how we avoid it. Anyway, I think it’s a fair point to say that if I accept that this catastrophe is happening — and I do — that it’s not terribly logical to get my back up so high over a too-emphatic teenager’s freakout." I'm going to have to agree with the the author of this article because yes, climate change is a scary discussion that does need to be addressed, however it is a bit unsettling to watch this young girl be so involved with big 'real-world' issues. Some would call her inspiring, and others would wish for nothing more than a normal happy childhood for Greta. However I must say, her public speaking and writing skills are impressive.

Facebook's Gaping Loophole in Fight Against Fake News

One of the biggest flaws within today's social media influence is misinformation, or as some like to call it, fake news. In recent years, it has become common knowledge not to believe everything you read on social media, especially on Facebook. Facebook has become notorious for displaying misinformation that is portrayed in a way that appears to be distributed by a credible source. Over the years, Facebook has taken action to stop the spreading of this fake news throughout their platform by attempting to shut down the accounts responsible. Studies have proven that these steps the Facebook team has taken have in fact been working...However, a loophole has been discovered that shows this company has a lot of work to do in order to stop this fake news epidemic completely. "Mashable has learned of glitch in Facebook Groups that allow Facebook Pages to easily create and spread fake news and misinformation via a feature that was previously shut down 2 years ago: editable link previews." However in June of 2017, Facebook announced that they were disposing of the ability to edit link previews in an effort to stop the flow of fake news on their site. A recent viewer noticed a glitch in the system that still allows users to edit these links, therefore obtaining the ability to showcase more fake news to the world. This article published by Mashable.com stood out to me for a few reasons. First of all, why were links  editable in the first place. This feature is a recipe for disaster to begin with. Second, I find it interesting that Facebook couldn't figure out how to disable this feature, being one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. Something just isn't adding up here. This leads me to believe that Facebook wants to keep this feature, because it draws attention to the feed on a daily basis, despite giving the website a bad reputation.

History and Workings of the U.S. Supreme Court

After watching videos on the Supreme Court justice system, I have come to realize that they hold the highest power, not just because of the character of those selected to be a part of it, but because they make every decision revolved around the original foundation of this country, which is the Constitution. I find it amazing how even 200 years later, our Supreme Court can still use the Constitution as a stable law system that remains relevant to our society today. Although there are apparent differences between society back in 1789 and 2019, some issues have continued to create a country divided throughout all these years, such as immigration laws. I found this quote from the video to be especially intriguing: "If the court ever stopped defending the constitution, or the people ever stopped listening, then one of the treasures that keep this the freest nation in the world cease to exist." This to me sums up the entire baseline of American culture. If our Supreme Court didn't strictly follow the guidelines given to this country 200 years ago, or the people refused to respect and accept the judgments of these Justices, the United States would not remain the "land of the free." This unique law system we have in the U.S. is what defines our nation and sets us apart from the rest of the world.

Woman Arrested Due to "F*** Trump" Sticker on Car

In Houston, Texas, a woman named Kate Fonseca claimed she had been arrested by the Fort Bend County Sheriff due to her vehicle displaying a "F*** Trump" sticker. Although Kate had actually been arrested on an outstanding fraud warrant,  Independent.co.uk stated that Sheriff Troy Nehls "almost brought her up on charges of disorderly conduct for the large decal on the window of her pickup truck." Kate and her husband told reporters that they are convinced she was arrested due to the sticker on her car, based on the Sheriffs political leanings. The judge ruled that although the sticker was offensive, it does not "constitute a crime." This case could be considered for violating Mrs. Fonseca's First Amendment rights, because this inappropriate decal could be considered her freedom of speech. This news article stood out to me because I agree that this was a form of Mrs. Fonseca's freedom of speech, however I don't think it is an appropriate use of our First Amendment rights. There are different ways to express our opinions and political standings without using offensive language. In my opinion, spreading hatred is not the correct way to abuse the freedom of speech policies, as well as get your message across effectively.
